Another good read on this subject is "Why Love Matters" by Sue Gerhardt. Emphasizing the importance of love and security and how it "shapes" the brain and triggers positive physiological responses. The facts presented in regards to the negative physiological processes that occur when a child encounters stress, fear, etc., how these effect a developing brain as well as the continuous cycle it sets up, are powerful enough to prompt any loving parent into greater self awareness.
